Dr. Michael Morgan, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Environmental Observations and Prediction, Cites Data Assimilation and JEDI as Key to Improving Operational Predictions in UIFCW Opening Remarks

When Dr. Michael Morgan opened the UIFCW Conference on July 24, 2023, he focused his remarks on not just data assimilation but the work being done with JEDI by JCSDA and partners, recognizing that work as a key part of the future of forecast models. “I think [data assimilation] is a key area where NOAA going forward should be making some significant investments,” he said, continuing, “the other piece that…is important here is the work that we have ongoing with the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation. The Joint Center supports a number of products including JEDI. JEDI really forms the basis for how we’re going to do data assimilation operationally in the years to come.” Later in the speech he declared that “The UFS needs to complete its transition to JEDI. I really think this is something that should be prioritized.” He finished with another mention of JEDI and JCSDA, putting emphasis once again on the importance of data assimilation and the work of the Joint Center and its partner agencies.
